Em 1984 Bob Geldof dos Boomtown Rats e Midge Ure dos Ultravox, uniram esforços e criaram o projecto " Band Aid " com o objectivo de empreenderam uma luta contra a fome em África. Tudo começou quando Bob Geldof assistiu em Outubro desse ano a uma reportagem na BBC sobre a fome na Etiópia. Chocado com as imagens que vira, procurou através da música fazer algo que lhe permitisse angariar fundos para combater aquele flagelo. Se a Geldof cabia a coordenação deste projecto, Midge Ure estava encarregue da produção musical. As principais estrelas da pop britânica de então foram convidadas, dando corpo ao " Band Aid ", cujo single " Do they know it`s Christmas? " alcançou o nº1 da tabela de singles britânica a 15 de Dezembro de 1984, tornando-se num intemporal hino de Natal. O projecto de Geldof e Ure não podia ter começado melhor e do outro lado do Altântico a resposta não se fez esperar. " USA for Africa " surgiu em 1985, reunindo nomes sonantes da música norte-americana. Em termos de popularidade este projecto rivalizou com o britânico (também nº1 da tabela de singles britânica a 13 de Abril de 85). Do sucesso de ambos, resultou o primeiro mega-concerto realizado à escala mundial " Live Aid " em Julho de 85. Ponto alto do movimento de luta contra a fome, foi transmitido via-satélite para todo o planeta e tornou-se no principal acontecimento musical da década de 80.
